G3 Terrain

Post by MikeBlackburn »

Hello
Please could I clarify which terrain files I need to have in my Terrain folder?

I want the highest terrain resolution available to be overlaid onto my vector map. Do I need the .DEM files from the Enigma page or only the .DAT files form the G3 to be copied into my TERRAIN folder on the iEFiS?

Thanks
Mike

The G3 uses the DAT files. TerrainL.dat is the low resolution file (this is always needed). The other files are the high resolution files arranged in 8 horizontal bands covering +60 to -60 degrees latitude.
High resolution data is only used for synthetic vision (the 3D image of terrain ahead). It is used when you are close enough to the terrain to make it worthwhile.
It is never used in vector maps. Not much point - would just slow things down.
