Compass failure

Post here anything about a more technical nature not directly related to a product - installation questions or solutions, anything you think may help others as well. Floobidust - a term sometimes used by us nerds to categorize anything that does not fit into a category. Sort of a wild card.

Compass failure

Post by thinthing »

I have a MAG-2/SP-6 compass setup in my plane which was installed by a previous owner, so I'm not 100% certain about how it was installed. Since it is the only MGL instrument, I'm assuming it was wired directly rather than through an RDAC.

A few flights ago I suddenly got the dreaded red X on the display while turning crosswind just after taking off. It cleared up during the flight, but died again as I was returning to the home airport. The MAG-2 manual says to check the comm lines and assure that the sensors are working, but that's all. I just had an annual, which included working behind the panel, so some wiring might have been hit, but it worked fine for several flights after the annual was completed.

The SP-6 manual doesn't say anything about how to go about checking the sensors - at least without an oscilloscope. I have a blinking green light, so I know it has power, but don't know what it's telling me - I've never noticed it before, but I'm pretty sure it was solid green.

Any ideas on how to go about a systematic troubleshooting? I can't find anything in any online manuals, or in the knowledge base topics.

Thanks.
