N-16

Post by cor »

Rainier,

I have an iEFIS (Explorer) connected to a Vertical Power VPX on serial port 1, uAvionix echoUAT on port 2, MGL V-6 on port 3 and, a Sandia STX 165R on port 4. Recently I purchased a N-16 which I attached to port 5. In iBox diagnostics I see activity on ports 1 thru 5. The N-16 is connected to an Archer NAV antenna via RG400. Serial port routing has the V-6 listed at MGL NAV/COM 1 and the N-16 is listed as MGL NAV/Com 2. The iEFIS is set for full radio panel on top. Com 1 is enabled and Com 2 is disabled. On the iEFIS Com 2 is “X”ed (not red) out. The iEFIS NAV box is labeled “NAV ana”. The iEFIS navigation manual indicates that RS232 based navigation radios should be connected to serial port 1. Is this why I am not receiving a CDI from the N-16 and because of the VPX on port 1, do I have to add a Razor or Vega control head via CAN to receive CDI? Thanks.

You can use any RS232 port on the iEFIS for the N16.

If you see "NAV ana" it means you have selected analog navigation inputs (not the N16). Please select RS232 based navigation. Also, as the NAV system in the iEFIS can be used for both a real NAV radio and a simulated NAV radio (GVOR and GLS) once it detects that there is a RS232 based nav radio you will see an additional entry in your NAV menu (NAV button) - you can select at any time between simulated and real NAV radio.

Please pardon my naivety, where does one select RS232 based navigation inputs? Or where is “Setup HSI/GSI Indicators”? Thanks.

Have a look in your system setup menu -> External HSI sources setup. If you are not using the analog navigation inputs on your iBOX please deselect the tick box "+/-150mV analog inputs enable.

As for the RS232 - you don't do anything other than tell your EFIS that you have one connected by means of specifying which port you are using.
It will show RS232 on your NAV status the moment it sees the navigation radio on your selected port.

Note that even if you have external navigation coming in this way you can still select internal GVOR and GLS - you will find a new selection in the NAV menu to switch between internal and external. This entry shows only if there is an external feed detected.

OK. The tick box “+/-150mV analog inputs” is not enabled. The N-16 is attached to the IBox’s port 5 and Serial Port Routing/Allocations indicates “RS232 port 5 (external): MGL NAV/COM 2 radio”. The NAV status remains “ana”. The system is iEFIS G3 version 1.1.0.3, FlightOps 1.0.0.3. I have verified that the RS232 cable is paired TX -> RX and that there is activity on the iBox serial port 5 when the N-16 is turned on. Is there anything else I should be looking for? Thanks.
