V10 input to headset intermittent when double tap Volume

Hello,
Although I have a V10 in my plane, I am writing this for a friend that has a V10 in his Sonex Waiex he bought and is now flying. He just finished his first cross country and will return this afternoon and hope we can have a simple fix for him.
His radio and headsets has been working properly — able to transmit, receive, intercom, and hear in the headsets.
Today, he was able to hear the AWOS for a moment then lost it. He noticed if he hit the Volume button a couple times he can hear the AWOS again but lost it after a few seconds.
While airborn, he tried unplugging his headset and replug it into the PJ plugs. Even tried the pax plugs. He tried to call center and noticed his TX bar graph worked as he transmitted. He also noticed his RX bar graph worked shortly after his transmission as if center acknowledged his transmission but he did not hear anything in his headset.
He is using a non ANR helicopter headset with the PJ plug adapter and it has been working. When he transmits, he is able to hear his voice in the headset.
Any suggestions of what may be the issue or even a fix?
Thank you for any help,
James
