Aviogaurd and challenger lite

Connected the challenger lite to the Avioguard and controlled it with a switch. The output of the Avioguard looses voltage as soon as the switch is turned on. Wired the switch to control the input to the Avioguard and the EFIS turns on and operates.
Is this the way the Avioguard is supposed to function?
