Upgrade over serial port

Hi,
Quick question about upgrading Blaze devices using the serial port. What are the RS-232 signal level to use?
RS-232 specify up to -25v/+25v, typical old serial lines are -12v/+12v, but nowadays micro controllers often use 0/5v or 0/3.3v (and many USB-serial adapters use those levels rather than the 60 year old levels. Is it ok for the Blaze devices to deal with -12v/12v levels? I just want to be sure not to destroy the serial port with too high a level. Would they be able to use 0/3.3v or 0/5v adapters?
Thanks.
